Chapter 1: Introduction

As you engage in this module, you will become more familiar with current educational practices that enhance and support the teaching and learning of literacy. This module addresses the following specific objectives for teachers at the secondary level:

• issues commonly encountered by secondary teachers with regard to literacy
• educational practices in content areas that require literacy skills, including assessment and evaluation
• instructional strategies in content areas that reinforce students’ reading and writing skills
• appropriate terminology in discussions relating to literacy
• books, websites, and literacy experts related to the contemporary teaching and learning of literacy in secondary schools
