Chapter 1: Introduction
Students use mathematics throughout their daily lives, whether
they are aware of that fact or not. Many will use mathematics in
future professional roles. Competence in the field depends largely
on effective teaching. How might students in your classroom today,
use mathematics as adults?
Take a few minutes and play the matching game.

Effective mathematics teachers are familiar with the required curriculum
and resources. They also provide active learning
opportunities for all students. As in every content area, students
bring diverse experiences and a wide range of ability levels to
the classroom. Teachers must be prepared with appropriate strategies
and resources to meet the needs of their students.

Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) should be
obtained from your school or local public library. Web links are
provided for these documents, but a hardcopy version is recommended
as a valuable addition to your library.
