Chapter 1: Introduction
Students and adults use mathematics throughout their lives. Many will use mathematics in
future professional roles. Competence in the field depends largely
on effective teaching.
How might students in your classroom today use mathematics as adults? Take a few minutes and play the matching game.

Becoming an effective mathematics teacher means being familiar with curriculum and resources, as well as providing active learning opportunities for all students. As in every academic discipline, students bring diverse experiences, a wide range of ability and varying levels of motivation and enthusiasm for the subject to the classroom.
